영어공부하며 기부까지 하는 곳

 

오늘의 놀이터는 단순히 놀다가 가는 곳이 아닌, 나의 놀이가 간접적으로 남을 돕게 되는 그런 일석이조의 곳입니다.  

 

아래 사이트는 여러분이 정답을 맞추는 퀴즈에 나타나는 광고를 볼 때마다 수익금을 쌀로 기부합니다. :)

예전엔 맞추는 퀴즈 개수에 따라 20개의 쌀알을 기부했는데 이제 광고를 봐야하는 방식으로 바뀌었네요. 그만큼 기부수익을 내기 힘든 거겠죠..  게다가 최근 코로나 사태로 인해 온라인 광고수익이 급감하고 있어 예전에 비해 맞추는 퀴즈 당 기부하게 되는 쌀알의 개수가 줄긴 했지만 (10개에서 5개) 그래도 수익금을 온전히 유엔의 World Food Programme에 사용된다고 합니다. 코로나가 얼른 종식되어 기부할 수 있는 쌀알의 양이 빨리 회복되면 좋겠어요.

메뉴바를 클릭하면 아래와 같은 메뉴가 나타납니다. 

 

 

카테고리란은 다양한 주제에 대한 퀴즈를 해 볼 수도 있습니다. 최근엔 일본어 퀴즈까지 생겼네요. 영어 어휘, 문법 뿐만 아니라 과학, 예술, 상식까지 다양한 주제의 퀴즈가 있습니다. 

 

난이도를 골라 퀴즈에 도전해볼 수도 있어요. 랜덤으로 등장하는 퀴즈 수준이 좀 시시하다면 퀴즈 난이도를 높여보세요! 반대로 너무 어렵다면 난이도를 낮춰볼 수 있겠죠? 오답이 많으면 기부도 많이 할 수 없으니까요. ^^ 

 

Challenges는 현재(2021.3) 진행되는 건 없지만 특정 시기에 기부 목표가 소개되면 방문자들이 퀴즈에 도전하여 그 목표를 위한 기부금을 쌓을 수 있어요.

 

 지난 2월에 진행된 World Food Programme 노벨상 수상기념 퀴즈 챌린지 

 

퀴즈 카테고리에는 수시로 주제가 업데이트 되는데 코로나로 인해 아래와 같이 코로나 신설주제가 생겼네요.  

Categories에 있는 Science에 코로나 주제가 신설되었네요.

 

원래 이 사이트를 개발했던 사람이 아이들의 SAT 단어실력 향상을 위해 사이트를 고안하였고, 어휘공부 사이트로 처음 제작하였어요. SAT 시험있는 달에는 기부된 쌀알이 급격히 늘었다는 후문이... ^^;;  당시에는 어휘 레벨을 1부터 60까지 조절할 수 있고 영어단어는 옆에 스피커버튼을 누르면 발음도 제공했어요. 그러나 이제는 단순히 어휘보다는 퀴즈사이트로 전환이 되면서 주제가 훨씬 다양해졌어요. 

 

 

예전 퀴즈 구성방식

예전엔 지금보다 디자인이 세련되지는 않았지만 그래도 머리식히기위해(?) 잠시 들어가 간단하게 퀴즈하기에 좋았었어요.

Net Game Boosts Vocabulary, Fights Hunger

   John Breen, a computer programmer, developed the Internet game FreeRice.com to teach vocabulary and help fight hunger. FreeRice.com is quickly becoming all the rage for school children as well as immigrants learning English.

   Breen said the idea came to him one day in his kitchen in Indiana. He was sitting with his two teenage sons, preparing the older for the SAT.

 

"The younger one made a mockery of the situation. He kept saying, 'he doesn't know this word, he doesn't know that word,'" Breen said. "So I decided to do something on the computer to help my son learn vocabulary words."

 

    What Breen came up with was a word game that he thought others might like to play on the Internet. He was already operating the Web site Poverty.com to inform people about hunger. So, he merged the two, and FreeRice.com was born.

   

    Here's how it works: Contestants are offered four definitions for a word; by clicking on the right definition, a donation of 20 grains of rice is made to the U.N. World Food Programme. The U.N. distributes the rice worldwide.

 

   English teacher Michael Hughes puts the Web site up on a large interactive screen and uses the game to warm up his classes at Alice Deal Middle School in Washington, D.C. Hughes' class raised 280 grains of Rice during a short session. While that's hardly enough for a daily ration for a starving child abroad, it still adds up, said World Food Programme spokeswoman Jennifer Parmelee.

 

"FreeRice.com is up to more than 8.2 billion grains of rice, which is one heck of a lot of rice and more than enough to feed 325,000 people for the day," Parmelee said.

The Web site earns money from advertising and gives cash to the Word Food Programme. Some $100,000 has already gone to buy rice to feed survivors of a recent cyclone in Bangladesh.

 

  Parmelee said the Web site offers a greater gift – the gift of awareness about world hunger. In just two months, FreeRice.com has driven the most Internet traffic to the World Food Programme site.

 

  "We are all kind of dazzled by the power of a great idea — an idea that seemed to have come completely out of left field," she said.

 

  Breen said he has hired a dictionary company to put some more words in the game, which adjusts as you are playing to different levels from zero to 50.

 

  "I myself can't get much above level 45, and it is rare to get above level 48. But there are some people who cruise right up to level 50. So for them we are going to add some super, really ultra, tough words," Breen said. And, he said, his son's vocabulary "has improved markedly."

 

  Breen said e-mails are coming in from around the world from people trying to learn English to teachers and college students. He wants them to take away something more than just a few new words.
